I’ve been using Ddario strings for 20 years also! Not a pro player, but I would love to learn more chords and how to develop progressions as I do write songs
I’ve recently tried Optima 24 carat coated strings both acoustic and electric. They are the best I’ve ever used but they are between TWO and FIVE times as expensive as most other brands. Are they five times better? No. But they do sound better, especially the bass strings, E A D
Hi Andrew. Very useful especially with being bombarded and overwhelmed by such a wide choice, especially for the not-so-seasoned players and beginners. Please do a video on transitioning from acoustic to electric guitar for the first time. I am currently doing that. Using baby fender Amp in my bedroom which is fine for practicing but using big acoustic crate in lounge. Doesn't seem the electric guitar is compatible with an acoustic Amp. Store explained this to me but I felt it just a gimmick to sell me a separate Amp for the electric guitar. At your convenience please and I thank you in anticipation. Warm regards, Sunny South Africa.
Wow Andrew this is such an awesome video I love it.😃👍❤️🎶🎸

that's what's wrong with the world. not enough Reggae.
This is great!!!
Wow nice😃👍❤️🎶🎸
I’m lucky enough to have a Gibson ‘Lucille’ and for riffs Mid Position (both PUs), with Position 5 on the Varitone switch (higher value capacitor in the circuit) and both tone knobs on 10. That sits nicely in the band mix, being noticeable but not intrusive. Many folks recommend isolating the Varitone knobs on 355 style guitars but that’s a crazy mistake!
Awesome😃👍❤️🔥⚡️🎶🎸
Thanks for sharing those thoughts about music/guitar school Andrew. It's good to hear from an experienced graduate about how that knowledge can be applied.

I find it a bit ridiculous that a lot of these music stores that give lessons want their teaches to have a degree which costs a fortune but wanna pay them minimum wage . Go to music college so you can someday teach at music college otherwise take some lessons , start jamming and eventually teach on your own
It's super rare to meet anyone who knows theory who didn't go to college for music so wanting a degreed person for teaching is not bad if that is important for the store's philosophy of teaching, but you are more than dead on right about paying peanuts to the person with the degree. Good old competition can fix that faster than anything. If people won't take the job they have to raise the pay rate.

Nice one. I am a piano player and I just learned a new trock. Thank you.
More good suggestions Andrew. When I was young my musical heroes often were self taught or mostly self taught so I thought I could do the same. I did an okay job of it and played in some bands but the longer I've been at it the more I understand the wisdom of what you say here for newer players about having teachers or a school like Musicians Institute to really learn the craft and the theory. I wish I could have heard your words in the 1970's. But I am very glad to have found you on UA-cam. You've helped me fill in some of the large gaps in my knowledge.
I haven't learned anything from UA-cam for a long, long time. (I'm a jazz player.) But what I find simultaneously amusing and infuriating is that so many "teachers" contradict each other. Everyone has their own method of course, but when they begin to conflict on the basics, it's really maddening. Fortunately, I had a bit of a head start so I could differentiate. And everyone doesn't learn the same way. I learn best when a teacher presents concepts, rather than a piece-at-a-time of a 10,000 piece puzzle. Show me the box the puzzle came in with the whole picture on the cover, and let's discuss that. Stringing beads doesn't work for me. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from my wife - who doesn't play, but is an extremely sharp observer.
The thing is that UA-cam guitar teachers use UA-cam for advertising their online courses.
I really appreciate your advice, Andrew. I'm learning guitar on my own. My wife says that I'm an advanced beginner. A lot of what I've learned is based on the music I love. Before a person can become a musician, that person must love music. Since I love all kinds of music, I really had to think about what genre I wanted to learn first. Since blues is in so many different styles, I started there and then plan to branch out from there with occasional forays into songs from other genres I love. I really love the independence of learning on my own. I also have the ability to figure things out on my on. I remember trying to play F with a partial barring of strings 1 & 2. At first I thought that I'd never be able to play it. I worked on it and discovered how to play it on my own. Once I got it, it was very sweet indeed. You talked about learning music theory, but how important is it to learn how to play by ear? The best thing you can ever tell someone learning how to play guitar is that it will seem really hard at first, and it will take time. Don't give up, because that is the natural course of things.🎸🎸🎸
Thanks, Andrew. Lots of good points. A year ago I knew a little behind some music theory as far as 1,4,5 for chords, but learning where the majors and minors happen consistently in a scale really made a difference if I don't have a piece of music right in front of me. Theory is just added bonus to playing. Thanks!
I tell my students a lot of the same things, like, "UA-cam can't tell you when you are messing up and how to EASILY fix it", and that a lot of teachers on youtube won't show the easiest positions on the neck for how to play stuff (why is that????????). BUT, I will happily sort through some vids if you need it to get you one that has got it right and it makes an extra excellent tool in the tool box for learning. Another thing I have noticed about online guitar and even piano, is there are very few videos that come up for simple, short rudiments for the first month of learning - aka first four weeks. I usually just invite the student to record me playing the stuff if they would like it as supplement to the in class learning. Most record it, few actually use it. That thing about the shoulder getting messed up, that's news to me. All the complaints or warnings I have dealt with are in the elbow of the strumming arm, and the wrists. I will keep a look out for the shoulder thing too now. My shoulder suffers greatly from conducting when I haven't done it in a long time and then start again. It's the only time I use those muscles and boy howdy being super sore a day after a lousy 20-30 minute gig proves the old body ain't what she used to be.
Joe Biden to Iran "Don't" - they fired 300 drones and missiles. Joe Biden to Putin "Don't", he took a huge chunk of Ukraine. Not sure "Don't" has the power it used to.
My Dad got me started, but then I tried UA-cam. It was all over the place. Instead, I got a weekly in person lesson. I went through 3 teachers and then tried some different online sites. I tried GuitarTricks, but it was not a "course." So, I tried Jam-Play, but it was basically the same as UA-cam. Too many instructors and most of them waaaaaay beyond my skills. Later, I found Andrew Wasson and Creative Guitar. It was more along the lines of like what I needed. I personally could not have just learned from UA-cam. Some say you can, but not me.
I have exactly the same feelings about lacking a step by step plan.

Hia 50 and learning, and wondered if you could provide a link to the natural magnesium spray you use. Everything on Amazon is a crap shoot. My friend of 70 who has been playing for decades would appreciate this product too. Still an awesome player but slowing down due to stiff hands. Thanks for the tip!

I have an acronym. The person I try to avoid is the D.I.V.A., which stands for Demanding, Inflexible, Volatile, and Arbitrary.
That's great, (and TRUE!)
Good one Andrew. I'm not a great musician by any means but I've been in some bands and I've experienced some of your scenarios. Finding good partners can be a difficult thing. When you do find someone good it sure is nice.
Well said! Those key players you'll meet in your life are few and far between, but worth the wait.
To me, the biggest losers are always the musicians who squander their god given talent for the most mediocre and soul crushing work because somebody convinced them that the only value and artist can provide, is making money.
You got a point eith it being harder to find ppl. Even tho online the pool of ppl is bigger, you get no sense of who the person is through their online profile. A scene makes getting started a lot easier.
ok, so you're the sober super serious one.... that'll work out great for you :P i guess the singer needs to be a loose canon, for a band to be any good, and the rest just there to cover his mistakes. solid music is great, but music is now fixed... anyone can make music... the loose canon singer brings the fun and the soul into it. an artists short comings are making his style, a musicians short comings get him replaced... i guess well let andrew be in charge of the music for now :)
